Tips for saving

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

If you’re like most people, you probably have trouble saving money. I thought I’d try to lay out a few tips for better ways to save some cash. The first thing I would like to suggest is direct deposit. For those who don’t know, this means that instead of getting a check, your employer deposits the finds directly to your account. This can beĀ  helpful because it removes the temptation to simply cash the check and walk out with all of the money, spending it all before you the weekend is over. Another benefit of direct deposit is the ability to have a certain portion of the money go to a separate savings account. This way, you never see the money in your checking account, so you may even forget about it until your savings balance starts to increase exponentially.

The next thing I’d like to suggest is budgeting. I realize this might be difficult if you don’t work the same number of hours every two weeks, but you should be able to come up with a general idea of how much money you have to work with each week. Determine how much you need for various bills, and then figure out how much you have left over. Rather than spending all of this money, try saving part of it. You’d really be surprised at how fast a small amount of money adds up.

My final saving tip for today is to evaluate what you spend money on. Ask yourself tough questions, such as, “do I really need to buy three cups of Starbucks coffee each day?” Try cutting certain things out and saving the money instead. I’m not saying you shouldn’t spend money or have fun, I’m simply suggesting that saving some money is a great idea. You never know when you’re going to have to pay for an unexpected car repair, or even the dreaded tuition bills of college.
