Valentines on a Budget

Valentines day is coming, and most of us men are not wealthy yet, so I’m going to try to help you get by this year, and maybe help put the day in context for you. We all want to make that special lady happy, but let’s think this through for a second. If you’re in high school, and maybe even a freshman or sophomore in college, there’s a pretty good chance the girl you’re dating now isn’t going to be the one you marry. It’s always a possibility, but it’s definitely unlikely. There is a LOT of life left to live, and chances are you’re going to have multiple girlfriends along the way. With that in mind, I’d like to suggest NOT spending a ridiculous amount of money unless she’s your fiance or wife and shes got that rock on her finger to prove it. Now for the rest of us, here are a few suggestions:

1. Tickets for a show- Maybe to see a band you both like, or some kind of play she wants to see. It’s about her fellas.

2. Make something- Art has never been my strong suit, but if you can do it, this is the perfect day for it.

3. Mix tape- Make a CD with all of your special songs, and write something nice on the cover of the CD so she always remembers where it came from. Buying songs on itunes isn’t very expensive, so combine this with something else small you think she’d like. Maybe a romantic movie or 2.

4. Take her out to dinner- This is obvious, most of you will do this anyway, but I wanted to point out that when you’re 16-25 years old, dinner definitely counts as part of the gift, especially if you go someplace nice. Just bring her some flowers.

5. Get her something that is unique to your relationship- Girls love it when you remember important things in your relationship, or just silly things that are meaningful. You know the kind of stuff I’m talking about.

Well those are some of my best low budget ideas, but feel free to come up with your own. I wouldn’t exactly call myself the love guru, so this list is certainly not exhaustive. If you hate it, stay tuned for my list of what NOT to get for Valentine’s day. I think you’ll love it.
